Is it time to bring out the orange ball in Colorado?
Snow is expected to fall once again during the Colorado Rapids’ home matchup with Chivas USA on Sunday afternoon (3 pm ET, UniMas) as the Rapids seek their sixth result in their last seven games.
Mother Nature has a knack for dumping snow during soccer games in Denver – many fans of the US national team won’t soon forget last year’s snowclasico at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park – and that’s exactly what’s on the horizon once again this weekend. Denver is under a Winter Storm Watch, with 4-9 inches of snow expected on Sunday and Sunday night.
The Rapids have already played in the snow once this season – a 2-0 win over the visiting Portland Timbers on March 22 – and they had their 2013 home opener against the Philadelphia Union postponed a day by a winter storm before eventually losing, 2-1.
They also narrowly missed snow trouble during the 2011 postseason, when a snowstorm rolled into Denver two days before the team’s wild card matchup against the Columbus Crew. The grounds crew at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park was able to clear a blanket off snow off the field before the Rapids won the game, 1-0.
