With a commitment to young domestic players, Bruce Arena is leading the San Jose Earthquakes to Supporters’ Shield contention in his second season.

Bruce Almighty: Arena Cultivating Young Talent Once Again
The San Jose Earthquakes are sitting tied atop the Western Conference standings thanks to head coach Bruce Arena and a stable of domestic talent.
No team in the league has had more minutes played from players born in the United States than the Quakes. The catalyst has been Homegrown star Niko Tsakiris who leads the club with two goals and five assists. Meanwhile, former MLS SuperDraft picks Daniel Munie (2023), Reid Roberts (2025), and Beau Leroux (2024) have taken a clear step up in Arena’s second season. The group has helped the Quakes rank second in the league in expected goals (20.49) only behind Vancouver (23.15).
Whether it’s Matt Turner, Gyasi Zardes or Jozy Altidore, Arena throughout his career has entrusted young domestic products. That lineage of successful players continues to grow in San Jose, and they will look to prove they are Supporters’ Shield contenders against Austin FC (10:30 p.m. ET) on Wednesday and St. Louis CITY SC on Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET).
Sometimes the Celebration Is Better Than the Goal

The adrenaline from scoring a goal creates some of the best moments in soccer and Matchday 8 was no different, with players scoring everything from their first MLS goal to their 40th.
A former top-five MLS SuperDraft pick, Shak Mohammed joined Nashville SC this offseason and has found his footing with the organization, capping it off with his first career MLS goal on Saturday night. The goal came off an unselfish assist from Hany Mukhtar and Mohammed’s emotional response toward the former MVP showed just how much it means to score a goal in MLS.
On the other coast in Seattle, Cristian Roldan scored his 40th career goal, with a celebration announcing that the Roldan family is growing. Cristian and his wife Ciana are expecting their second child in August, which he talked more about after the match.
Matchday 8 showed once again that no matter how many goals you score, the celebration following can always mean something special.
Mastroeni Masterclass Powering Red-Hot RSL

With head coaching changes an early theme in 2026, Real Salt Lake do not appear to have any issues there as Pablo Mastroeni might be doing his best work in year six with the Claret and Cobalt.
Mastroeni is the third-longest tenured head coach in the league and this season illustrates why. Despite multiple injuries to start the year, Salt Lake is flying and currently on pace for its best season in almost every major category. Mastroeni’s tactical flexibility, combined with his knack for developing players, makes Real Salt Lake a serious contender in the Western Conference.
When looking at the roster, Mastroeni’s coaching is all over it – the growth of young Homegrown stars, elevating his key Designated Players, and putting SuperDraft picks in positions to succeed. It might be early, but Mastroeni might is undoubtedly a contender in the Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year race.
This week will be a litmus test for Salt Lake as they host Inter Miami CF on Wednesday night (9:30 p.m. ET) before facing the LA Galaxy on Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire (7 p.m. ET).

With speed, scoring, and a lot of dancing, Houston Dynamo’s newest Designated Player signing Guilherme has quickly introduced his Brazilian flair to MLS.
Despite only playing seven games, the dynamic winger ranks tied for third in MLS with nine goal contributions (five goals and four assists), having played a role in 80% of the Dynamo’s goals. The thing about Guilherme is not just his immediate impact but the fun he has been doing it with. Whether it’s dancing after a goal or dribbling through defenses, the energy down in H-Town is infectious.
With an infectious smile and a game to match it, Guilherme is must-watch television when the Houston Dynamo travel to take on rivals Austin FC on Walmart Saturday Showdown (8:30 p.m. ET, MLS on Apple TV).
