NEW YORK — In search of more Canadian players, the expansion Montreal Impact picked out a promising one on Tuesday with the No. 1 pick of the 2012 Supplemental Draft.
Impact manager Jesse Marsch selected Toronto native Evan James first overall in the Supplemental Draft, adding a former Canadian youth national team player to his squad.
James, who helped UNC Charlotte reach the NCAA College Cup final in December, performed well in three matches at the Player Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The talented winger showed off his speed and technique, cutting inside to score two goals at the Combine. After not being selected in last week's SuperDraft, he was tabbed as one of the top prospects available entering Tuesday's Supplemental Draft.
Capable of playing on both the left and the right, the 21-year-old James will be competing with the likes of Justin Mapp and Sanna Nyassi for a starting spot on the wing.
