Report: Seattle Sounders hunting Croatian winger Ante Erceg

Ante Erceg - Hajduk Split

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

A Croatian outlet has linked the Seattle Sounders to one of the top wingers in that nationā€™s top division, Ante Erceg.

Zagreb-based tabloid 24sata reported on Thursday that Seattle have made a ā‚¬6 million ($7.1 million) bid to Hajduk Split for the attacker, a right-footed winger who typically plays an inverted role on the left flank and has been one of the leading scorers and assist-getters in Croatia in recent seasons.

Erceg, 28, has spent only a brief period of his career outside his homeland, a six-month stint at Turkish side Balikesirspor, though he has featured, and scored several goals, in UEFA Europa League action. The 24sata report claims that the Soundersā€™ efforts to secure his services dramatically outpace the only other significant interest from overseas, a much smaller bid from Danish club Brondby IF.

If accurate, the transfer fee supposedly offered for Erceg would rank among the largest in MLS history, nearly the size of the $9 million price Seattle reportedly paid to sign Clint Dempsey in 2013.
