The Philadelphia Union are reportedly looking to end the season-long loan of goalkeeper Carlos Miguel Coronel in order to free up an international slot.

The 22-year-old Brazilian, who was signed on loan from Red Bulls Salzburg in January with an option to buy, has joined the Austrian Bundesliga team for preseason training, according to Pro Soccer USA.

“We have the option to keep him basically until the end of the season,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said at a press conference Wednesday. “They don’t have an exit. We are having some troubles with our green cards and international spots and we are working on a solution.”

Coronel appeared in four matches, starting three. His last appearance came on May 11 in a 2-1 win over Toronto FC. Matt Freese, a 20-year-old Homegrown, has seen the bulk of the time when Andre Blake missed games due to injury and international duty. Tanner said if Coronel were to stay in Philadelphia, the only likely playing time would be with Bethlehem Steel of the USL Championship.

“We are not trying to keep him,” Tanner said of Coronel. “We are trying to find a solution in order to release him to Salzburg.”
