The rumors have haunted Chivas USA fans for years, but are they finally coming true?
Reports emerged on Friday, starting with a tweet from Mexico-based ESPN reporter Omar Fares, that Adolfo “El Bofo” Bautista is set to come to MLS on a one-year deal. Stories followed from ESPNFC.com and MedioTiempo.com with further background on the move, which supposedly could be announced as early as Saturday.
When asked about the reports by MLSsoccer.com, a Chivas USA spokeswoman said it was "mere speculation, so our club will not comment on a player that isn't a current member of the team."
The 34-year-old forward is currently out of contract, though he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire since his last stint with CD Guadalajara ended in 2011. Bautista has made stops at Querétaro and, most recently, second-tier Atlético San Luis, with barely a single goal to his name in league play.
But Bofo certainly still carries name recognition among Chivas and Mexico fans.
He was a mainstay for the Mexican national team from 2002-10, appearing in two CONCACAF Gold Cups, two Copa Américas and the 2010 World Cup. And he was a cult hero in his first go-around with Guadalajara from 2004-07 with his trademarked bleached hair and curious jersey selection of No. 100.
