TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Re-signed

New York City FC have re-signed attacking midfielder Maxi Moralez through the 2022 season with an option for 2023, the reigning MLS Cup champions announced Saturday.

Moralez was out of contract and eligible for free agency, though now returns to NYCFC for his sixth season. The Argentine has 24 goals and 60 assists across 133 regular-season games (125 starts) for the Cityzens, cementing his place as one of the leagueā€™s premier No. 10s.

Moralez was a Designated Player for NYCFC but re-signs below that financial threshold.

ā€œWe areā€Æabsolutelyā€Ædelightedā€Æthat Maxi has signed a contract extension,ā€ NYCFC sporting director David Lee said in a release. ā€œSince arriving at the clubā€Æin 2017, he has been an integral part of this clubā€Æboth on and off the fieldā€Æand him staying at the clubā€Æwas one of the main priorities of this offseason. He will always have a very special place inā€Ætheā€Æhistoryā€Æof this clubā€Æafter being soā€Æinstrumentalā€Æin bringingā€Æus ourā€Æfirst piece ofā€Æsilverware.ā€

Moralez, who turns 35 just as next season begins, joined NYCFC a half-decade ago from Liga MXā€™s Club Leon. He has also featured for Italian Serie A side Atalanta, Argentine Primera Division club VĆ©lez SĆ”rsfield and others.

Moralezā€™s best NYCFC season came in 2019 when he earned MLS Best XI honors and placed on the MLS All-Star Team, becoming the third player in league history to record 20-plus assists in a singleā€Æseason.

ā€œI am very happy,ā€Æand my family is happy tooā€Æwhich is theā€Æmost important thing to me,ā€ Moralez said in a release. ā€œThis was what we wereā€Æalways looking for, to try to continueā€Æwith NYCFC, especially afterā€Æfinishing a beautiful year.

ā€œWeā€™re in one of the best cities in the world. Iā€™ve been here five yearsā€Ænow, the people have treated me marvelously, our fans have always shown me their affection. I feel very fortunate to be here longer at a club and city that feels like home. I'm already lookingā€Æforward toā€Æwhat this group can achieveā€Ætogetherā€Ænext season. We all wantā€Æto have another incredible season.ā€

NYCFC will partake in the 2022 Concacaf Champions League, with a Round of 16 series against Costa Rican side Santos de Guapiles starting on Feb. 15. Their MLS Cup defense begins Feb. 27 at the LA Galaxy.
