NEW YORK (Monday, March 25, 2024) – New York Red Bulls midfielder Lewis Morgan was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Matchday for Matchday 6 of the 2024 MLS season.

Morgan produced his second career hat trick, scoring three goals and adding an assist in the club’s 4-0 victory over Inter Miami CF on Saturday, March 23 (Watch Highlights from His Performance Here). With his hat trick – the second of his Red Bulls’ career – Morgan joined Bradley Wright-Phillips (five), Amado Guevara (three), and Clint Mathis (two) as the only players in club history to record multiple hat tricks. After a 14-goal and four-assist season in 2022 for the New York Red Bulls, Morgan was hoping to lead the club in 2023 before his season was derailed by injuries. Morgan only played in five games last year, but the Scottish midfielder has already flipped the script in the same number of matches in 2024, sitting in a tie for the league-lead with five goals after Matchday 6. Morgan has also scored the game-winning goals in three of the opening five matches to start a season, becoming the ninth player in league history to do so.

Morgan opened the scoring in the third minute when he received a flicked pass from Dante Vanzeir and slotted his finish in the side netting (Watch Here). The duo connected again the 51st minute as Vanzeir found Morgan at the top of the 18-yard-box and the midfielder placed his one-timed finish past the goalkeeper to extend the lead to 2-0 (Watch Here). Morgan then added an assist in dramatic fashion by sliding to keep the ball in play, dribbling around a Miami defender and locating Vanzeir in the box, who set up Wikelman Carmona to slot home his shot for a 3-0 advantage in the 66th minute (Watch Here). Vanzeir added his fourth assist on Morgan’s third goal when he brought down a long pass and played it across to the Scotsman to pass into the net to seal the 4-0 victory (Watch Here).

Morgan becomes the first Red Bulls player to be named MLS Player of the Matchday since Luquinhas earned the award for his performance on Matchday 15 of 2022. This is the second time Morgan has received the honor (Matchday 2 of 2022) and he becomes the 11th different Red Bulls player to earn the honor multiple times.

The Red Bulls will look to continue their ascent up the Eastern Conference standings when they travel to face Orlando City SC at INTER&Co Stadium on Saturday, March 30 (7:30 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV).

The MLS Player of the Matchday is selected each matchday of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while an X (formerly known as Twitter) fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio, and online media.
