Louisville City FC won the battle of the USL sides in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Saturday, as they defeated Nashville SC 2-1 at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ken.
The two USL teams competed in the lone game of the round that did not include an MLS team. Louisville City's quarterfinal berth is their deepest run in the Open Cup in their four-year history.
Louisville opened the scoring in the 24th minute, as defender Paco Craig notched a goal for the defending USL champion from a short corner, set up by a cross from Oscar Jimenez.
After halftime, Paolo DelPiccolo doubled the lead for Louisville, receiving a deflected pass in the box and executing a sharp turn to beat Nashville goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
Nashville weren’t giving up, and they got on the board in the 68th minute on a header at the near post by Matt LaGrassa to cut the score to 2-1 in favor of the Kentucky outfit. But it wasn't enough to change the outcome for the expansion side.
Louisville City will be on the road to face the Chicago Fire in the quarterfinal round next month.
