Honduras call in 4 MLS players for friendlies against Puerto Rico, Chile

Alberth Elis – Honduras – tight shot

Four players from various MLS clubs have been called in by Honduras for a pair of September friendlies.

Houston Dynamo defender Maynor Figueroa, FC Dallas midfielder Bryan Acosta, Vancouver Whitecaps winger Michaell Chirinos and Houston forward Alberth Elis have all been named to Fabian Coito’s team. They’re set to play Puerto Rico on Sept. 5 and Chile on Sept. 10, with the Central American side hosting both matches.

Honduras finished bottom of Group C at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Los Catrachos last made the World Cup in 2014 and finished with draws against Ecuador and Paraguay earlier this year. They failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after losing in an intercontinental playoff series to Australia.

Figueroa is Honduras’ all-time caps leader (156), while Elis has seven goals for the country. Acosta, a Designated Player at FCD, is a longtime mainstay for Los Catrachos, while Chirinos, on loan at Vancouver from Olimpia, is increasing his role.
