In another intriguing glance inside the Video Review process, the Professional Referee Organization’s Greg Barkey broke down the four decisions made during Week 9 of the Major League Soccer season in the organization’s latest edition of Inside Video Review.
Before examining the four situations, in which PRO takes us inside the Video Review room at the stadium and allows us to hear bits of the conversation between the Video Assistant Referee and the referee on the field, Barkey offered up some stats from the 2019 season.
There have been 40 reviews in the 106 league matches, an average of 0.38 reviews per match, which Barkey said is a slight uptick from this time last season. Penalty decisions made up 43 percent of the reviews, followed by red card (33 percent), goal (20 percent) and mistaken identity (5 percent).
Barkey explained in depth all four Week 9 Video Review decisions, including the controversial handball against Johnny Russell in Sporting Kansas City’s4-4 draw with the New England Revolution and the foul against Minnesota United goalkeeper Vito Mannone that negated a D.C. United goal.
