Crew Comeback Was Really One for the Record Books: Week 13 News and Notes

MLS MEDIA RESOURCES: WEEK 13 NEWS & NOTES

News and notes and statistical trends from around Major League Soccer

CREW COMEBACK WAS REALLY ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS

Columbus Crew head coach Caleb Porter was absolutely right. When his team came back from an early two-goal deficit – while also a man down – for a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium on July 9, it was an historic achievement.

Just seven times in MLS history has a team overcome a deficit of two goals while also playing a man down, coming back to get at least one point from the match, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The last occasion was during the MLS is Back Tournament last July when D.C. United went down to Toronto FC 2-0, and then while a man down scored two goals to grab a 2-2 draw. Just once has a team won after going down two goals and a man – the Chicago Fire doing it May 24, 2000 for a 4-3 win against the Dallas Burn.

But the Crew were the first team to perform the feat while playing an away match. Of the first five occasions, in each instance the home team overcame the two-goal and man disadvantage to gain a result (the MLS is Back Tournament was played in a neutral site at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando).

TIMBERS’ DIEGO VALERI TICKS OFF ANOTHER MILESTONE IN CAREER ASSISTS

With his assist in the Portland Timbers match at Austin FC on July 1, Diego Valeri recorded the 90th assist of his MLS league career.

Valeri becomes just the 10th player in MLS history to reach 90 career league assists, now just one behind MLS Original Cobi Jones for ninth place on the all-time list. With 85 career league goals in MLS, Valeri is just one of three players in MLS history to have reached at least 80 goals and 80 assists for their careers, joining the only two to reach the century mark in both totals: Landon Donovan (145 goals, 136 assists) and Jaime Moreno (133 goals, 102 assists).

SOUNDERS FC UNDEFEATED RUN ENTERING FURTHER RECORD STATUS

While setting the all-time MLS record for the longest undefeated streak from the start of a season, Seattle Sounders FC are moving up the charts in the longest runs without loss in league history.

Dating back to the final matches of the 2020 season, Sounders FC have now gone 15 consecutive league games without defeat – tied for the seventh-longest undefeated streak in MLS history. The all-time record is 19 consecutive matches without a loss, set first by Columbus Crew SC from 2004 over the start of the 2005 season, then equaled by FC Dallas in 2010, the only club to go 19 consecutive league games undefeated in a single season, before Toronto FC also tied the mark over a year-long span from 2019-2020.

wk13_c

The 13 games without defeat from the start of the season is also now tied for the ninth-longest undefeated run contained wholly within a single league campaign, which Sounders FC also did during the 2017 MLS season. Just one team has gone more than 15 consecutive games without a loss in a single season in league history – FC Dallas in 2010, with the record-tying 19-game undefeated streak.

They were among seven different goalscorers to tally for United – the first time there were that many goalscorers for a team in a single game, in 6,308 MLS regular season games all-time.
