Chris Rolfe was rewarded for his career season on Thursday, when he inked a contract extension to remain with D.C. United. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In his ninth season in Major League Soccer and his second with D.C., the 32-year-old Rolfe has a career-high and team-leading 10 goals and four assists in 27 regular season appearances this year.
“Chris has been a key contributor for us since we acquired him last year, and we are thrilled to have secured his continued commitment to D.C. United,” D.C. general manager and vice president of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a statement released by the club. “His ability to create and score goals has been vital to the team, and he is among a group of important veteran leaders in the locker room.”
The 2015 campaign marks the fourth time that Rolfe has recorded at least eight goals and the eighth in which he has scored at least six. He is ninth among active MLS players and 27th in league history with 64 career goals, and he is 20th among active players with 32 career assists.
Rolfe is tied for third in MLS this season with five game-winning goals. His streak earlier this season of four consecutive games with a goal or an assist is tied for the third-longest in MLS in 2015.
Rolfe was acquired by D.C. in April 2014 from Chicago in exchange for allocation money. The University of Dayton product began his career with the Fire in 2005, playing five seasons in Chicago before moving to Danish club Aalborg BK following the 2009 season. He returned to MLS in 2012, when he re-joined the Fire.
Rolfe and United will return to action on Saturday, when they'll face Montreal at Stade Saputo in a crucial Eastern Conference tussle (5 pm ET, TSN2 and RDS in Canada, MLS LIVE in the US).
