FRISCO, Tex. — It was a windy day to kick off the 2018 Generation adidas Cup, with strong gusts affecting almost every match in a measurable way. Balls routinely hung up in the strong wind and teams going with the wind had a distinct advantage.
FC Dallas got off to a strong start in their opener at home, beating French giants Monaco 2-1. Dallas finished second in qualifying in the Central region behind Toronto FC but got off to a good start in a tough Champions Division group that also includes the LA Galaxy and Pachuca.
Dallas left back Julian Hinojosa, who made two starts in the 2017 GA Cup, scored just six minutes into the match and Johan Gomez was able to add an insurance goal in the 52nd minute to get their side off to a good start in 2018.
The Galaxy completed an MLS sweep in Group D, beating Pachuca 1-0 behind a first-half goal from Eduardo Blancas.
Sounders trounce Matsumoto Yamaga
The Seattle Sounders are one of the favorites in the Premier Division but they started out shaky in their first match, falling behind in the third minute to Matsumoto Yamaga from Japan. Blake Malone at center back calmed the backline from there on and helped the team start to dominate possession.
Attacking stars Azriel Gonzalez and Ray Serrano, both on USL contracts with Sounders 2, scored a minute apart soon after to take the lead. Later on, Marlon Vargas and Daniel Robles combined with those two to pull Yamaga apart scoring in the final seconds of the first half and dominated the second to the tune of a 6-1 final. Fuentes proves the difference for Quakes
The San Jose Earthquakes may have had a rough qualifying campaign but they took full advantage of their fresh start by defeating the Chicago Fire in their first Premier Division match. Drawn into a group with the New York Red Bulls, Tigres UANL and the Fire, San Jose needed only a half-volley strike from MLS signee Gilbert Fuentes to down the Fire 1-0.
Both Fuentes, who played in an attacking midfield position, and fellow MLSer Jacob Akanyirige showed why they earned their contracts. Fuentes was calm and creative on the ball while Akanyirige showed the ability to marshal a composed backline.
The Red Bulls and Tigres will play Saturday night after New York were delayed arriving in Frisco due to inclement weather in the Northeast earlier this week.
